Prior Incarceration - You Have Options!
Prior incarceration can leave you feeling disoriented, limited, or ostracized from others around you. The transition and stigma around returning citizens can be tough to navigate. We’ve provided some resources below to help understand possible options for second chance job opportunities, education, funding and partnering organizations that can help lead you to success.

What can I do as a returning citizen?
Lets follow the story of Chance to the left. Chance has a conviction for a misdemeanor, which can ruin his chances of getting licensing or off-put schools or employers to accept him for a position. Chances best option is to apply for CQE as soon as he can to seal his record.
While he waits for this to happen he can find resources for second chance options.
For employment
- look into jobs with fair chance policies, most job search hubs have a “second chance employment” filter to make this easier
For education
- look into what policy and protocol is for acceptance. Some institutions don’t allow certain offenders at main facilities but have branch facilities
- find special scholarships for returning citizens
- Look into education centers specializing in returning citizens and rehabilitation cases like Flying High, Oakhill Collaborative, or Compass
Resources for stability
- look into the CQH (Certification for Quality Housing) to receive housing assistance
- take advantage of local resources like United Returning Citizens, Prospera, and Home for Good
